Practicing Piano Notes

Learning the Staff

Use the links below to practice naming notes without the games.

The following exercises will lead you through the steps we take when learning how to read the staff.
Each exercise can be further customized to be easier or more challenging. If you are having a hard time, use the settings to turn on the helpers. If you want more of a challenge, use the settings to turn on the challenge mode.

1. C Position- Bass Clef

Animal Sentences:

Lines- Good Birds Don't Fly Away

Spaces- All Cows Eat Grass

2. C Position- Treble Clef

People Sentences:

Lines- Every Good Boy Does Fine

Spaces- All Cows Eat Grass

3. C Position- Grand Staff

Bass clef and treble clef combine to make the Grand Staff. Use the animal sentences for bass clef notes and people sentences for treble clef.

4. G Position- Bass Clef

Also known as low G position, this is the position that we learn after C position.

5. G position- Treble Clef

Also known as low G position, this is the position that we learn after C position.

6. Middle C Position

I sometimes call this the butterfly position! With both thumbs sharing middle c, your hands make the shape of a butterfly

7. The Grand Staff

Ready to name notes from the bottom line of the bass clef to the top line of the treble clef? Give it a try!

8. The Grand Staff- plus accidentals

The bottom line of the bass clef to the top line of the treble clef including accidentals.

9. The Grand Staff- plus accidentals and ledger lines

Includes all the notes of the staff, plus the 4 notes below and about each staff, which are found using ledger lines.
